As the Director of Photography, my primary instinct was to revolutionize the way celebrity portraits were traditionally approached. I aimed to move beyond the conventional, formulaic methods often used in celebrity photography, seeking to create more authentic and nuanced representations. By allowing my team the flexibility to experiment, we were able to capture the true essence of the individuals, highlighting their personalities and stories rather than simply showcasing their public personas. In addition to redefining the approach to celebrity portraits, I made a conscious effort to hire emerging and unrepresented photographers, providing them with opportunities to showcase their unique perspectives and talents. This not only allowed fresh, innovative voices to shape the work, but also encouraged a broader diversity of styles and approaches within the industry. This approach not only set a new tone for the publication, but also contributed to shifting the way celebrity portraits could be perceived by both the subject and the audience.
